Welcome to Koru

Thanks for stopping by. Whether you are here to learn more about music therapy, to find therapy services for yourself or others, to find useful resources about mental health and wellness, or you just randomly found your way here, I hope you will find something helpful for you.

As I believe an important consideration in selecting a suitable therapist is the therapist's approach, areas of expertise, and values, allow me to begin by briefly introducing myself.

I am Vivian, a certified music therapist in the United States and Canada, and a registered Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) therapist with a Master of Music Therapy degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada, and an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from York University, Canada.

I have worked with a variety of client populations ranging from children to the elderly with a myriad of conditions and illnesses. My areas of expertise involve providing music psychotherapy services to individuals with mental health issues, cancer patients and their primary caregivers, at risk youth, and music therapy services to children with special needs. I have also acquired an interest in promoting professional development and holistic personal growth through my work.

I teach and supervise music therapy interns at Chulalongkorn University and have presented at various international conferences in Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. I have also guest lectured at the University of Hong Kong and at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. I served as the Regional Liaison for the Western Pacific Region of the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT), as the Chair of the Education and Certification Commission of the WFMT, and am currently the President of the WFMT. I  also serve as a member of the Ethics Committee of the Hong Kong Music Therapy Association (HKMTA).

My Approach

“The path that one person follows is not the correct path for any other person. Each of us must walk our own path to growth and enlightenment — that is the way.”

Through music and the arts, we create our own path to growth. In my work, I take a psychodynamic, humanistic, and holistic approach to assist individuals in achieving their potentials and enhancing their quality of life.

Aside from fulfilling our basic human needs and reaching our potentials through the process of self actualisation, I believe there are some basic fundamental virtues of humanity that serve as fertile soil for human growth, both as individuals and as a species, that needs to be nurtured and cultivated. These are the foundations upon which my philosophical orientation is built:

  • Compassion

  • Empathy

  • Hope

  • Humility

  • Kindness

  • Authenticity

  • Love

  • Respect

  • Altruism

  • Generosity

  • Peace

Why therapy?.....Why not?

Stigma around the topic of mental health has been around for a long time. While talks and perceptions about mental health issues and well-being have gradually become more normalised,  often apprehension and anxiety still remain when the topic is brought up in conversations for fear of stigma, prejudices, and discrimination. It is important to understand that this aggravates the issue and makes it more challenging to heal and recover. Rather, educate yourself and others about it, make efforts to talk openly about it, normalise mental health treatment, just like other health care treatment, and choose empowerment over shame. Koru is here to help. For helpful resources and readings about mental health, well-being, and how music therapy/music psychotherapy can help you, please click here:

Testimonials

My son began receiving music therapy sessions from Miss Chan when he was 8 years old. As a child with autism, he is impulsive and has difficulties with speech and self expression. After about 6 months, improvements were seen in the areas of self expression and attention, he was able to engage in sessions much better and used music  and a variety of musical instruments to relieve negative emotions. Greater improvements were seen over time. He also attended dyad sessions where he gained social skills. Through these sessions, he become more aware of others around him and began interacting with another peer. I appreciate the care and patience Miss Chan had when she worked with my child, she was considerate and used creative ways to engage and assist my child throughout the therapy process. Miss Chan not only supported my child's development, she also had an influence on me, helping me to view my child's condition from a different perspective and embrace my child for who he is. I am dedicated to accepting my child wholly and patiently support him in his development, I believe this is the best for him. Thank you Miss Chan.
