Koru

Koru, the spiral shape in Maori art, symbolises new life, growth, strength, and peace. The word itself means 'loop' in Maori.

The spiral shape is based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond. As the young and vibrant fern unfurls, it signifies the beginning of new life and portrays the idea of perpetual movement and growth while the inner coil suggests a connectedness and return to the point of origin. When given as a gift, the koru symbolises the start of a new relationship, or new phase in a relationship, as it suggests growth, harmony, and new beginnings.

Koru and its Philosophy

Koru Music Psychotherapy & Creative Arts Therapy Studio offers music therapy and psychotherapy services to children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly with various conditions and therapy goals to support and enhance development, health, mental health, and holistic well-being.

Life consists of perpetual and continual cycles of new beginnings, growth, and endings. Remaining connected and returning to our roots is vital along life's journey to stay grounded and to obtain the necessary nutritions for growth. In therapy, we enter the process of finding inner and new resources for growth, strength to overcome life's turmoils, and peace to arrive at an ending as we journey along the cycles of life.

Music transcends language, understanding, and consciousness. When words can not express, music speaks. When music is used skilfully and intentionally in therapy, it opens our minds and allows perceptions of new thoughts and awareness which may bring about a renewed sense of self and spiritual enlightenment.  Music has a way of reaching the deepest part of our soul, the essence of our being, and opening up pathways for change and growth. Using music therapeutically to heal and grow, to self-express, and to build community is what Koru is all about.
